Arthur Browne

Arthur Browne is an award-winning journalist and author. His work has been recognized with a Pulitzer Prize; an NAACP Image Awards nomination; a George R. Polk Award, a Peabody Award, and a local Emmy Award.

Browne joined the New York Daily News as a copy boy in 1973 and concluded his career there as Editor-in-Chief. His titles also included reporter, Chief Investigative Reporter, City Hall Bureau Chief, City Editor and Managing Editor. As Editorial Page Editor, he led a team whose work documented that service at Ground Zero had afflicted 9/11 rescue and recovery workers with serious illnesses. The editorials won a Pulitzer.

Joining Newsday as Investigations Editor, Browne completed LI Divided , a project that exposed evidence of widespread discrimination by real estate agents. LI Divided won Polk, Peabody and Emmy awards. He served for two years as the global enterprise editor at Bloomberg News, where he led the coverage of the fraud that collapsed energy trading giant Enron in 2000.

In 2015, Beacon Press published Browne’s One Righteous Man: Samuel Battle and the Shattering of the Color Line in New York , a biography of the city’s first Black police officer. The NAACP nominated the book for an Image Award. In 1985, Browne co-authored, I, Koch, A Decidedly Unauthorized Biography of the Mayor of New York City, Edward I. Koch.

Browne is graduate of Boston College and St. John’s University Law School. He has led New York University Abu Dhabi seminars titled News. Evidence. Truth?, examining issues in the media through the lens of investigative reporting.
