Carol Gilligan

Carol Gilligan is the author of In a Different Voice , described by Harvard University Press as “the little book that started a revolution”. Bringing women and girls’ voices into conversations about self, morality, and relationships, her work was foundational in articulating a relational psychology and an ethic of care. The Times Literary Supplement named her 2023 book, In a Human Voice , as a best book of the year and called it “essential reading for our time.” In 2025, Gilligan won the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy for correcting distortions in the representation of women and girls and introducing an ethic of care. in 1996 Time Magazine named her one of the 25 most influential Americans. For over 30 years Gilligan was a member of the Harvard faculty, and she held the University’s first chair in Gender Studies. In 2002, she joined the NYU faculty as a University Professor with appointments in the law school, the Steinhardt School, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Known for her innovative work on listening and for her class on listening, she and her students have developed a method of listening called The Listening Guide. In 2026, Routledge will publish a Handbook on The Listening Guide as part of its prestigious international handbook series. Most recently, Gilligan is the author of the novel, Solstice , which Publishers’ Weekly in a starred review described as “both cosmopolitan and exquisitely intimate.” As a researcher, she is currently engaged in a project called Breaking the Bargain: Strengthening Healthy Resistance and Courage in Girls
